Lost Keys
 

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle SE ADD and aI lost my key to my car and I don't have a spare key. Does anyone know if there is anyway I can order a pre-cut replacement key using my VIN# online? So that I don't have to pay an arm and a leg just to have the Locksmith cut me new keys?
When I called the Locksmith i explained the situation and I also told him that I ordered 2 new transponder keys and that all I needed was for him to cut my keys he then informed me that it was gonna still cost roughly $280 to $299 to cut 2 keys.
What can I do to save money and still get my replacement keys cut?

Unfortunately,,,,,,,,,usually locksmiths are cheaper than dealership techs.
Cutting the key is only part of the solution. The other part is;,,,,,,,,,,,the key(s) must be flashed/coded to your particular vehicle because of the security system. Only dealers or "certified" locksmiths can usually do the coding or anybody could steal your vehicle. Grant you this is an expensive learning experience, but you can code your own addl keys, but you need 2 working keys to do that. NOW,

Depending on how far you are from the locksmith ask if it is cheaper if you have the vehicle owed to him/
Get some idea what it would cost to have the vehicle towed to whoever can do the job. You only have 2 choices here, wish I could be more help.
Always , never hurts to get a second or third opinion.

But it's not possible to do at home, so visiting locksmith store for help is the best option.

You can have Ford parts punch cut keys off the ‘As Built’ data per your VIN. It requires you show vehicle proof of ownership.
As far as PATS programming,, your stuck with either a locksmith or Ford as noted ‘unless’ you have a Windows based laptop (?) and you can program your own on the cheap...

If so on the laptop, you can download a “Free subscription” of FORScan and then buy a ‘switchable’ (MS/HS CAN) ELM327 adapter off of eBay etc for about 30-35.00. The adapter will connect the laptop to the vehicles diagnostic connector. It a great platform as a diagnostic tool to have for future needs as well.

For PATS programming, you have to request an Extended License from FORScan which is usually available quickly. The License is a time sensitive security feature for 30 days for the programming tasks.
With a Windows laptop, the adapter, and FORScan with the active Extended License, you can delete all the known prior keys and reprogram the new sets. If one original key remains,, you can just program the second ..

Ford parts are not replaced at any locksmith store,i think David you are only dreaming about it to get new Ford keys at locksmith store.

Quite a few of the higher end smiths now have the capability to program PATS keys, in fact they generally have or can get the blanks. Programming PATS isn't limited to Ford stores, and as noted prior, it can be done on an individual level with only a small investment...

I had the same issue about a few months ago. Here is what I found out after a long research, helped me a lot. It was a very nice write-up actually, so I'm sharing it here in case anyone ever finds themselves in the same mess as me...

I guess there is a huge difference between different keys, models, etc. (yours is a key fob)

Also locksmiths and dealers charge different amounts for the very same key.

Generally speaking, to get a replacement key, you have three options:

1. Call an automotive locksmith that offers a mobile service for cars. Here is a phone number for a company that have many different locations and locksmiths: 800-223-1453. I think the work all around the US but not sure. Give them a call and ask.

2. Tow the car to the dealer.

3. Order a key online and have the dealer or locksmith cut and program it for you (if necessary).

If you do call a locksmith or the dealer, don’t forget to mention some important information so they will check if they have the key blank and the necessary tools to code you the new key:

1. Year, make and model of the car

2. Your exact location including street address and zip (for the locksmith to find you easily)

3. VIN number of the car located on the dashboard – very important

4. Make sure you can show them proof of ownership – otherwise they will not make you a new replacement key.



Regarding the cost, it really depends on the type of key you had.

There are 3 main types of keys:

Non-chip keys: for older models (mostly 2000 and older)

Transponder chip keys – these types of keys must be coded on site with a special machine, otherwise the car wont start. These are more expensive to make

Key fob – push to start – these are the most expensive types of keys. Mostly made for models made after 2015.

The average cost is somewhere between $180-$450. It also depends on your location, time of day, weekend, etc etc.
