Power Steering Bleed
 

Does anyone have any advice on bleeding the p/s on my 2008 Fusion? I wasted my money on a replacement pump and would like to not waste more. It basically has the typical p/s whine both before and after the pump being replaced. It has power steering but simply whines like crazy.

My guess some air got into the system with the original pump perhaps due to a failing o-ring. There are no leaks I can find and it has maintained its fluid level. I did the back n forth crap for 30 min or so up on stands with no results.

1.Remove reservoir cap and add fluid (mercon v) if needed.

2.Raise the front end up and support on jack stands.

3.Slowly turn the wheel 'fully' left and right directions at a minimum of ten times with the engine not running.

4.Again, check the fluid level and add fluid if needed.

5.Repeat the #3 and 4 steps until the fluid level stabilizes.

6.Lower the vehicle.

7.Start the engine and let it idle.

8.Slowly turn the steering wheel 'fully' to the left and right at a minimum of 10 times in each direction as before .. Don't hold the steeering against the stops for extended times.

9.Check that the steering fluid isn't foamy/airiated, and that the fluid level hasn't dropped. Fill if needed.


3.0-3.5 engines

Use a hand vacuum pump to evacuate trapped air..

1.Remove the fluid reservoir cap. Check the level and add (mercon v) if needed.

2.Raise the front of the vehicle and support on jack stands.

3. Step 3 requires a hand vacuum pump and hose inserted into the fluid reservoir as a cap or plug, you may have to fab one.

3. Start the engine.

4.Using the vacuum pump/cap, apply vacuum and maintain it at 20-25 in Hg. If equipped with a hydro boost system, then apply the brake pedal twice under vacuum.

5.Turn the steering wheel fully from stop to stop 10 times,, but don't hold the steering against the stops for an extended amounts of time.

6.Stop the engine.

7.Release the vacuum pressure and remove the reservoir cap.

8. Check the fluid level and add fluid if needed.

9.Start the engine again.

10.Re install the vacuum pump/cap and maintain a vacuum of 20-25 in Hg as before

11.Turn the steering 'fully' from stop to stop 10 times as before. Don't hold against the stops for extended times.

12.Stop the engine, release the vacuum and remove the cap.

13.Check the steering fluid level and add if needed.
