4.6 engine mods

hey ive got a '99 Grand Marquis with the 4.6 liter in it. I was wondering if this is the same motor that was used in similar year mustangs. its a SOHC motor and i want to know what will get me more power out of it. ive heard you can get decent power from this motor for relatively cheap but iam no good with computerized motor mods. i figure i can throw a cam in it but then the PCM will probably go nuts without a chip. I think its gonna get the basic cold air intake and exhaust system first but then where do i go with it without messing with the computer too awful much. also isn't the 4.6 just a sleeved 5.4 block? i'd like to eventually put a supercharged 5.4 in the car.

The 4.6L in your MM is different in many ways. But I am not the tech to tell you how it differs. The 4.6L are built in two different plants, and back then they were different enough that you have to treat them separately. And no, it isn't a sleeved down 5.4L. That is a completely different matter. As I recall they have the same bore centers and a couple of other similarities. But once again they are different engines. They do mount up on the same tranny and mounts from what I have gathered. You will get more power out of the engine with a chip and a tune, but first free up your exhaust. The CAI (intake modding)isn't going to net much horsepower increase if any. You can buy a tuner without spending too much money and "not have to turn a wrench".
