66 mustang clutch pedal
 

I have a 66 mustang convertible with 4speed. Over the holidays, I noticed the clutch smell and discovered my clutch pedal was not returning totally to the original position which was allowing the pressure plates to rub, giving me the smell. I can toe-heel the pedal back to original position and it releases the clutch. It shifts fine and when you let the clutch out, the pedal will return most of the way up, but stays approximately 1.5-2 inches from original position (disengaged). I feel it is probably one of the springs that has finally lost it's strength, but thought I would ask to see if anyone has had this to happen and if you can give me some pointers of where to look first. The smell is your clutch not totally engaging and slipping which causes it to burn. If you keep that up you will not have a clutch. I would definitely look at the springs and if your clutch has a good bit of miles on definitely check the adjustment (at the z-bar and in front of the release arm from the trans.) to be sure there's no slack in it. Last, if nothing else, I'd look at the clutch release arm pivot area inside the bell housing. A lot of people forget to add grease to the pivot not realizing how much pressure it handles - then it grinds away.
