2.3l 01 super confused

hey installed a good starter in my ranger and all it does is whine I have taken it out 4 times to check but I don't believe it is making contact with the flywheel what's the easiest way to align the starter when no shims are needed

Did you measure the starter nose length to flange to that of the old unit?

Make sure you received the correct starter because a starter for a manual shift is different from a starter for an automatic..
