2000 ford ranger XLT with code 174

I'm a first time user of Ford Forum. I have a 2000 ford ranger 6 cyl XLT extra cab with a check engine light on. On checking it with a CAN OBD II scanner it shows code 174 and the booklet describes this code as, "System Too Lean (Bank 2)". What does this mean in layman terms and what to do to correct this problem please. Thank you in advance.

It sounds like there could be a few issues, look here: Ford P0171 & P0174 Lean Codes.

I researched a few other sites and it looks like a MAF is a common culprit, we have that available. The part number will depend on the motor size, 3.0L requires F67Z12B579MRM (available here: #F67Z12B579MRM: Air mass sensor. MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. Reman.) and the 4.0L requires F57Z12B579NRM (available here: #F57Z12B579NRM: Ford. Air mass sensor. MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR.)

A little suggestion, if the code is suggesting one bank, it is a little difficult for the MAF to single out only one bank of two. Something like an intake gasket or vacuum leak on that particular bank might be a better place to start looking.
