Default 2001 ranger high rev mid drive

Hi, I own a 2001 ford ranger xlt 4x4 with the 4.0 v6 in engine. I bought it used a couple months ago with 355,000 miles. The owner said the engine was rebuilt and tranny rebuilt about a year ago. Most of the miles are highway miles. I trusted the guy because he was a close family friend. Anyway, mid way down the road it suddenly the revs will jump up and won't shift into next gear. I'll put it in neutral and back in drive and seems to fix the problem for a couple more miles. Sometimes but not all the time the over drive light will start blinking when it happens. Sorry for the long post but if anyone knows what the problem could be the help would be greatly appreciated.

check the trans fluid and make sure its not low. If its low, top it off and check for leaks. Does the fluid smell burned or is it brown in colour?

have someone check for dtc.
