88 ranger transmission swap

I have an 88 ranger with a 2.9 and an automatic a4ld in it. i want to swap it with a 5 speed tranny.i know that buying one like i want would be eaisier, but i want to build a truck i want ,and this one was free.so my question is:
besides buying all the parts, does the 2.9 bolt up to a transmission off of a 2.3? or a 3.0?,or do i have to get just one from a 2.9.and also do i have to do any mods to the motor or computer to make this work?.any info would be greatly appreciated.i've tried other sites and haven't even got a reply

a 2.3 trans will not bolt up to your 2.9 I had a 88 ranger auto with a 2.3 and I was told by 4 deferent mechanics that my traney I had for a 2.9 would not bolt up or work your best bet would be to find a truck with a manual for parts find one that has a bad moter or is wrecked hope this helps

RE: 88 ranger transmission swap

if you do the engine swap you need to get the engine side of the wiring harness to the 2.9and the motor mountsi have done several of those conversions and it is simple if you get the harness and the computer module thats in the passenger side kick panel with all that its only a few hours (with experience a weekend for the first time)of project...i just made a 91 4 cyl 2 wheel drive into a v6 4x4 so dont let anyone mess with you about doin stuff to your rangers they're great trucks
