Default 89 ford ranger cranksensor/ i need help

I have a 1989 ranger 2.3 and I am trying to replace the crank sensor, The manual says to pry out the little red clip inside the connector end of the sensor and remove the wires and then you can slide the wires behind the inner part of the timing belt cover then reattach wires to connector, so I tried this on the old connector first so I didn't damage the new one and this thing won't come out. my question is, is their a special tool i need or just a simple trick that will work.

Thank you in advance for the help
