92 4 banger stumbles

I recently picked up a 92 Ranger. 4 cyl, 5 sp. 73,000 original miles.
While driving it yesterday, it stumbled several times. By stumble, I mean it was like you shut it off and tuned it back on. I also noticed that the charging gauge would jump back and forth. The gauge also shows a more than normal charge rate.
It starts just fine, so the bat is good. How about the charging system? Could this be the culprit?
I'm pos this is an electrical prob.
I really like this little truck, 'Lil Blue'. Great mpg. Doesn't go real fast or very quick, but it doesn't need to, I use it strickly for trans to and from work.
Any tips?

I also have a great work horse, an 86 3/4 ton, longbed 4x4, 460 4sp. ;)

Well, I started a search of the wiring.
I found the bat cables to be loose and the bat connection to the alt was off. The alt has died so I'm in the process of changing it out.
