97 ranger 4x4 poping clunking noise

Default 97 ranger 4x4 poping clunking noise
I have a 97 ranger 4x4. when it goes into 4 wheel drive it will have a load clunk or poping noise for awhile. also the same when it goes to 2 wheel drive any ideas?
