98 Ranger 3.0 Engine high RPM's when warm
When my 3.0 Liter 98 Ranger warms up I have an intermittent problem with high RPM"S - I'll pull up to stop or be in traffic and the engine goes to about 3000-3300 RPMS' - sometimes I can get it to slow by feathering the clutch a few times and then it will drop back to idle in nuetral or with the clutch in - but this is hit or miss? I suspect some sort of sensor - help please!

Yes - I had a new starter put in so the battery was disconnected - but it was doing this even before - what's your thought?

i'm with hockey, check the IAC valve and also the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) to make sure they are operating within spec volts.

yeppers if I had to bet money I say IAC, take the 2 blots off unplug the wire get you some carb. cleaner , and down inside the holes get filled with blowby jest keep rinsing it out till its clean , an carefully see if the plunger will move up an down. If i remember rite it has a one inch stroke that provides the computer with over 230 diff settings !!!!,, I have seen them so clogged up the the holes in the throttle plate where closed off,, they are basicly a metered vaccum leak
