Until someone more familiar with your exact vehicle replies; This is what I would try.
If you have a test light , make sure you have voltage going into the switch and out of it.
Then check under the vehicle at the transfer case for a voltage signal to the solenoid that activates 4WD. If all is well so far then you would need to see if the solenoid is responding to a voltage signal from the switch. if OK, check if the linkage the solenoid moves is free to react to the selected signal from the switch. This may give you something to go on until a better explanation for the flashing dash signal is suggested. Will look for addl info to help.

Give the shift motor a PEEK-SEE as 99.9% of the time, the SHIFT motor is froze up (crudded) and will not turn. The shift motor is located on the right rear side of the T-Case and looks like a wiper motor. These tend to crud up inside. I normally disassemble the unit, clean it up and re-grease it with synthetic grease. Extended periods of NON-USE will also cause them to HANG. I believe they still require a Security TORX to remove.
