catylitic converters question

I have a friend that works at the ford dealer. Car would act like it had transmission trouble at about 60 mph would not go faster and the rpms shot up real high. Took it to the dealer. They said plugs and wires were very bad which prob cause the cats to go bad. WHY THE HELL are there 4(four) converters on a small truck like this with no dual exhauat(true dual). I have no clue. So the at cost price for 4 cats are 800.00 through them, I seen some on ebay for 250.00 for for new direct fit ones.

Here is the main Question:
I live in a county without emmisions as a requirement. Cant I Just run one catylitic converter? Or none at all? what are your guys comments on this problem. thanks

Must be the 'new' generation :)

You can't just cut the cats off, since fuel trims ect are calculated in part from the 02's and monitors sampling the exhaust stream.. Be careful what you buy aftermaket, the quality isn't near as good as OEM..

Also, you'll probably find out that you'll need at least 2 aftermarket converters. Most parts books list an * after the part number. The * normally has a quotation stating "* Requires two". What year vehicle do you have and what state do you live in? Depending on the year and state, you may still be under the Federal mandated emmisions warranty, the the MFG would have to replace them. Also, the cost of the converters are driven by the cost of platinium and the amount needed in each converter design. Have you priced a WALKER replacement unit?
