Hello, I'm new to the board I have been on a few other ford message boards but they just dont cut it.I have watched this board for a long time and got info for a long time so I hope this is my new home! :-)
I have a 2000 ford ranger 2WD v6 3.0L. Here's my problem, The only speed my blower will work is on high. Low, med/low, and Med doest work. I'm thinking its the resister but im not sure?? I think its stuck open. Has anyone had this problem? If so where is the best place for me to get my hands on a new resister?

Most likely..

Chances of the fan switch being bad in the first 2 positions would be less likely, but 'possible'.. The way the heater resister works, is that the fan control switch/selector routes 12V through the resisters coils of 'different' resistance dropping the voltage to the fan motor/blower for different speeds..The blower in return cools the resister.. If the thermal limiter fails and goes open, the only fan speed will be only HI since its the 'only' circuit that the voltage isn't reduced..

 

I thought that was the problem, Is this a ford factory only part or can I get it at my local auto zone and or pep boys?

 

You might find something aftermarket.. I know their available for older trucks non OEM, but I did a quick online check at Autozone and it showed a listing, but not available yet.. Either way,, the resistor is under 20 bucks in most cases.. To verify a bad resistor, jump the thermal limiter (looks like a diode) with a test lead and all the fan functions/positions should then work..

Update:
It was the resister, it got so hot it melted the wire harness right to the resistor housing. So I had to cut the wires, after that I went to the local pick your parts and found a 2000 ford explorer that had the right part. Everything works great!

Im having the same problem with my 96 Ranger. Where is this resistor located?

 

The heater/blower resister for your application is out on the A/C Evaporator Core Housing near the blower motor... Here's the resister/plug for reference..
