hi ya'll,
i have a 2001 ranger edge 3.0 liter V6. i love my truck but when i accelerate above 50, going from 4th to 3rd gears, i hear a sound from the engine that sounds like a screw rattling in a coffee can. has anyone else had this problem? what can be done to stop this and what is the cause? i'm getting ready to go to boot camp and would like to have my truck running good before i leave.

 

could be something loose on your exhaust. have you checked it over?

 

i had the exhaust system checked about a month ago as park of my services but it is still there. it'll happen every now and then under no specific conditions.

 

thats wierd..... hmmmmmmm maybe its a bearing or something i dont know or maybe you ran over an umpa lumpa

I had a similar rattle on my 98 just recently. Turns out it was something in the catalytic converter. I had mine replaced and the noise went away. I'd have that checked. You can get a universal cat from advance or auto zone for under $100.

the rock guard for your cat or exhaust might be loose and rattling against the exhaust every now and then
