Spring in steering

Does anyone know what is the function and purpose of this spring in the steering mechanism?

Most people don't get that involved in steering columns. Was there some reason you went in there?

I messed up and disasembled too much while diagnosing my problem. The spring fell when I took off the pin holding the lever and now the lever is really though to install back with the spring under it. So I am just trying to figure out it's purpose and to know if I'd be fine driving without it...

I don't know if you want to get involved in what you might try.
I have in the past removed the upper section of the steering column assy replaced nylon bushings and did some "corrective moves" to prevent reoccurrence. . I found that was the easiest way to determine what went where and place it.
If the spring was only to maintain pressure on the shift lever so it stayed in position selected it should be somewhat easy to figure out when all is open and can be seen..
It is a little complicated , but since you have a diagram to refer to and take your time , you just might be able to get it back together correctly.. What is sometimes not too difficult for one person can be challenging to another. If you are determined and have the patience I believe you can get it right.
