Starter problems?

I have a '90 ranger and it has been having starting problems. At first my mechanic friend told me to just replace the starter and that worked for a while but soon the starter went out. We thought it might just be defective so we traded it in and after a couple more months the second one stopped working as well. I have another new starter but im afraid to put it in in case theres something im just forgetting. Ive heard people say i need the fly wheel and then other people say there is no fly wheel on my car. Am i missing something when i install these starters or is it not a starter problem at all? any help from you guys is appreciated.

Prety sure all cars have a flywheel. question is the bad starters.....how does the gear on it look? is it grinded? Also was the relay/solenoid changed also? It can be still pushing current throught to the starter after the engine has started. Not enought to notice but enought to push current throught the starter burning out the starter slowly.

Like EWGOETZ mentioned check the gear for wear, some fords seem to need shims on the start as they get older to properly align the start. If the start just quits turning (IE electrical, I'd try another brand)

May also check voltage drop across the positive cable from relay to starter. Must not exceed 0.5 V.

May also check ground from engine block to battery negative post.
