starter solenoid or starter

i'm having trouble with my 92 ranger 4.0, i can push start the truck if needed, but when i turn the key to start it, all i get is, "click" from the starter solenoid, i don't know if it's the solenoid itself or if the starter is shot, i would very much appreciate some help.

i would say in my experience when something like that happens it was the whole starter. just go to salvage yard and get a referbished one or something for 40 bucks

I agree, it does sound like the starter. And I assume you checked to make sure the battery was still good?

Start by checking the battery and the cables that connect to the post. Sometimes if the cable is loose at the solenoid it will cause the same thing. Once you have checked them, try testing the cables on the starter and if need be, replace the starter.

thanks guys, it was definately the starter, i just got one from a wrecker for 25 bucks off an aerostar, the housings were different so i just switched them (used the housing from the junk starter) and it works great, i opened up the old one and the brushes and everything were completely shot
