Thumping engine noise

After I drive my 91 Ranger for 15 - 20 miles it developes a THUMPING sound in the passenger side of the engine. It is noticable at slow speed or when stopped. When I turn the engine off it THUMPS a few more times, then it stops.

Any help appreciated.
