Default Trans problem

My 2001, 3.0 liter, 4x4 Ranger will not engage reverse. All of the forward gears work just fine. However, when I put the truck into reverse, it acts as if it is in neutral.

Several friends think it might have something to do with the vaccuum system for the tranny.

Any help would be appritiated.

im assuming that it is an auto trans, there isn't any vacuum system on the newer trannys, if it is an auto trans, get it up into overdrive, and hit the overdrive deactivation switch if nothing happens then you have a broken overdrive/reverse band.

The O/D disengages and reengages without any problems. Any other ideas?

Try to start vehicle in neutral? May have lost adjustment of shifter cable. If vehicle does not start in neutral then readjust cable. Does vehicle engage in reverse if you hold it btwn park and reverse? or reverse and neutral?

Reverse doesn't engage at all. I've tried the between trick and still nothing.

I'll try starting it in neutral and see what happens.

No problem with it starting in neutral.
