Ive have been doing some research on a roaring front end of a ford ranger and about 70% of advice given is wheel bearings or going bad. ok well my 03 4x4 Rangers front end starts a slow roar at about 5 mph and becomes a stronger roar the faster i go. it also roars louder going around a curve to the left. It is not my tires, they are smooth and they are cooper discover highway terrain. Is it my bearings or is it something else? if it is my bearings can i change then myself? Im pruty good with my hands. Whatever it is i need to save money! im trying to get through college if my truck will let me!

 

Your Ranger has a non-servicable wheel bearing. It's part of the hub assembly. These are very easy to replace. The noise being louder turning one direction verses the other is a sign of a wheel bearing failing. The hub comes pre-loaded with a new ABS sensor. If you have issues with the ABS engaging just before coming to a stop after replacing the hub assembly, you will need a new ABS sensor for the other hub as the new sensor will send out a stronger signal causing the ABS system to recieve different (false) wheel speeds causing the ABS to engage.

 

thanks common sense. i figured the wheel bearing hub was the problem unfortunatly. I will go ahead and change both. dang those things cost a a lot!!!!! Would timken be a good brand to buy?
