2003 taurus shifter won't come out park

Hello,
with the car started, the shifter won't move out of park. i turn car off and turn key forward one turn. at that time i can move shifter from park to any position. it will start in neutral. i was told it could be a switch in the column or down by brake pedal.

does anyone have a clue as to what the problem might be? can this be easily fixed? is there a diagram that might show me where the problem might be?

thank you in advance for your comments,

buck

If your brake lights do not work, check all fuses first. Then check the brake light switch and the connection on the switch. The switch is located toward the top of the brake pedal under the dash. You can go to www.fleet.ford.com then click on maintenance tab, then owners manual. Enter the information and download the manual. Go to roadside emergencies and search for fuses. It has a diagram of the fuse panels and will tell you which one is for the brake lights. You can go to www.autozone.com and create a free account and search the stop light switch and get information as how to replace it.
