99 sable harmonic balancer
 

I have a 99 dohc balancer that I think is bad.. I can move all the pulleys back and forth without the crank moving.. I looked at the harmonic balancer/crank pulley and it looks to have a rubber center. When i run the car all the pulleys move but when i start and turn off you can hear it clanking around. I need to replace the pulley and the center nut is reverse thread. Once I get this nut off how easy is it to get the pulley off ? Can i run the car the way it is or will it eventually break ?

you will need a pulley puller to remove the balancer it does have a rubber center and it has a sheer pin groove in the balancer and a pin on the crank that you can replace the pin has broke an that lets the crank spin an the pulley not move but when you crank the engine the speed of the crank will turn the pulley you need to replace the pin or it will scar the end of your crank up

labc gave you some good advise. Eventually you will experience hard starting because the crank sensor may be getting damaged. The sooner you change it the better.

So does the balancer have to come off or can the pin be replaced while its on the crank ? So I take it the rubber is just a dust/dirt shield ?

yes the balancer has to come off to get the broke pin out and clean the shavings off the crank an inside the hole for the crank and no the rubber works like a dampener it holds the outside of the pulley to the inside of the pulley it is metal rubber metal balancer the outside of it has belt grooves on it then you have rubber that holds it together an the inside has the crank hole an key way in it that slides onto the crank

forgot to add that the notches on the back of the balancer is for the crank sensor dont drop or hit the notches they will break pretty easy an your engine will not run

On mine the rubber is no longer attached to the outer pulley ring i can spin the outer ring and the rubber center stays along with the rest of the inner pulley. Can I just use a regular three legged flywheel/clutch puller to get this off ? or is it something special ?

ok your going to need the hole pulley then you can still use the steering wheel puller the should be 3 bolt holes you can use on the center part of the pulley an you can use a 3 jaw puller on it bu its much easer the other puller
