Default Belt or Bearing Noise

I have a 2000 Taurus and at 44K miles I started geting some noise from what I thought was the belt,so I changed the belt and it still made the squeal,so I replaced the tensioner pully and still had the noise, then I changed the Idler pully and still have the noise. The only thing I have yet to do is to change the power steering pump,or the Alternator or even the AC.It is so hard to tell where the sound is coming from because of the sound being echoing through the engine compartment.Has anyone ever had this problem or have any suggestions on how to pinpoint the problem. Thanks

Mike

I’m just now changing what appears to be a bad idler pulley. Can anyone tell me a torque spec for that bolt as there’re none in the Chilton’s or Haynes manuals

It would help to know what year, model, engine you have.

Oh sorry I thought you’d see it’s a 2003 Windstar by the title….2001 to 2003(I think) only came with the 3.8

Just tighten it up. The torque spec is not critical for that. That's why you can't find the spec for it.

Ah hah, so I can tighten it…..and then I can “TIGHTEN IT”, if you know what I mean…..as it’s a part that sees daily, ongoing function, and not just an arbitrary fastener keeping two parts together I’m mindful about its torquing or over-torquing

I assume you took the old one off or are about to, loosening the bolt should give you an idea how tight it should be when you reinstall it. We are not talking cylinder heads or bearing caps here, its just a pulley. .If you lack the confidence to have the feel on what is needed to torque a fastener w/o a torque wrench, maybe you should have someone do it for you. Do you really believe a mechanic would use a torque wrench on a pulley bolt? I doubt it.

Yeah I do lack that experience and by your comment I see you may just not know the answer to my question but thanks anyway.

@daddyblaize the torque spec is 35ft/lb. I would bet the bolt would not break till at least 45ft/lb.
I do not own a windstar so I do not know what engines are offered in what years.
I would also recommend not being to rude to others on this particular forum, there are only about 5 knowledgeable active members here.
