Emergency brake froze up

I have a 1994 Taurus that was up on ramps for about 2 months. Tried to back it off the ramps but it wouldn't budge so we jacked it up, removed the ramps and lowered it. Now it won't move front or back. We have sermised that the emergency brake is hung up. does any one know any way to free this up, short of cutting the cable? We have tried backing off of the brake adjuster, doesn't work.
Thanks dave

RE: Emergency brake froze up

While holding the release lever try to pull the e-brake pedal back to its original position.

If the car was stored in a damp place you may want to oil the cable and connectors.

RE: Emergency brake froze up

I had a similar situation with an Aerostar, and the problem is usually because the emergency brake doesn't get used regularly, and the cable seizes in the sheath. If you are lucky, it will break free (try backing up while stabbing at the pedal to "shock" the cable free. Otherwise, you'll just have to replace the cable, which is not a big job. Just for general information, this becomes very expensive on vehicles with rear discs, because the emergency brake is a rotating cylinder within the rear caliper, and nearly impossible to fix yourself. Easy prevention, occasionally use the emergency brake!
