Engine noise...
 

I have a 2007 Taurus SE with 62,000 miles on it. It has a 3.0L Vulcan. In higher RPM i have been getting a Chirping noise at end of the engine opposite of the serpetine belt. It sounds internal. It is loudest after the car has ran for 20 mins or so and at idle...

Has anyone here had this issue?

I have just read a post by green T down the page, it sounds like the same issue....

I am not completely familiar with the Vulcan engine. But: camshaft synchronizers can make chirping noises. I am not sure where they placed the camshaft synchronizer on the Vulcan.

Hi bluewind heres a link from another post showing the same issue. You have posed a good question about why they have the cam syncro on the vulcan. Why is it failing (lack of lube?) at approx 100,000K?

Mine failed outside of warranty coverage at 105,000K


I got mine R & R yesterday at a cost i am not happy with.

how's the oil pressure? if too low the valve train my be getting dry at idle

AS far as the oil pressure goes, i keep it topped up to full.

How else can i check that the pressure is right?

Spark: good job keeping the oil topped off. When you put the key in the ignition and light up the x-mas tree you see a little oil can icon. It indicates low oil pressure. Once you run the engine the light goes out in about a second.

When you drive and that light comes on the meaning of it shifts slightly: "It's probably too late to top off the oil." Actually, supposedly Ford designed a 5 minute survival time into the Vulcan engine, should it loose fluids (Book by Eric Taub: Taurus, the car that saved Ford).

A mechanic can use a gauge to measure the oil pressure at various RPM. The oil pressure can drop because of wear in the oil pump and wear of bearings. That wear would increase the space for oil to squeeze through. If that happens the top end of the engine may be starved.

Some 50 000 miles ago a mechanic told me my synchronizer is making noise but it should last at least for another 50 000 miles. According to him it would be due any day now. Funny thing I never heard that noise.
