motor mount

i had the front motor mount done on my 97 taurus sohc with a six cy. it was 280 and that seemed high. any opinions. also the mechanic told me the reason it broke was that my idle control motor was bad but the car idles at 1000 when warm and 1500 when ice cold for a few minutes and then goes to 1000 is this guy a crook.....any help would be apreciated

Yes, the guy is a crook. I have never came across a motor mount that broke because of an idle problem. I would be steamed due the fact that he thinks that you'll believe him!

But you have to look at what the high idle does. If it is idling high and you put it into gear, it puts extra stress on the mounts. Also your mounts are liquid filled. That is what takes a lot of the vibration out of the engine during idling.

If memory serves me correctly, the idle speed should be around 800 to 850 and drop to 650 in gear. High idle(cold) should not be much over 1200.

First of all $280 for a motor mount is high! Second 1000 minus 850 is 150 rpm. 150 extra rpm will not destroy the motor mount. When the car shifts between gears it puts more stress on the mount then 150 extra rpm. Just change the mount yourself a be done with it. Go to a junk yard and get one, they're loaded with these cars. Yes they might be liquid filled, but there isn't any more engine vibration in a Taurus then any other car. A 1000 rpm isn't any big deal. A good engine mount will last for the rest of thelife of the car.

An auto parts store told me this is a DIY project the mounts cost about $50 for a 95 Taurus. The engine moves about 3-4" when going from N to D .
