Taurus Wagon - brake problem

I have a 1998 Taurus wagon. The brake light came on, and I ignored it for a couple of days because the brakes were fine. Yesterday, I drove to work and noticed that my brake pedal goes down pretty far (almost to the floor), and the car is hard to stop (have to hit the brakes much earlier). No noise of any kind in brakes. I put in brake fluid - the brake light did go off (the fluid didn't read as low anyway). I still have the problem. What could be the problem?

RE: Taurus Wagon - brake problem

I have a 1990 FT sedan, and my master cylinder went after experiencing similar symptoms. Be careful....because mine totally failed when I was on Route 95 in Massachusetts rush hour traffic!
