Default Taurus water pump

Hey everyone, I have 2015 Ford Taurus police interceptor. Noticed while doing an oil change that I have the dreaded water pump leak coming down my compressor. I’m capable of changing it myself but was wondering. Has anyone done this by just removing the timing cover and NOT locking the cams? I saw a YouTube video where the guy left the valve covers in place and only removed the timing cover to change the pump after setting engine at TDC. Wondering if anyone else has had success not locking the cams.
