1951 F1 Steering Problem

Hi,

I've got a 1951 F1 pickup. My son bought it 4 years ago and gave it to me last year. It's been modified with radial tires, mag wheels, a Ford 302 engine, and power steering - all before he got it.

Just recently I had a rack and pinion kit bolted up to the straight axle. It was all over the road before and now can be driven with 1 hand. The problem I'm having is with the power steering. The engine and the power steering unit are probably from the 60's. Lately, the power steering cuts out intermittently causing a very jerky feel to the steering. Feels like one second you've got power steering the next you don't and then you do again. This happened to me going down the road yesterday then as quickly as the problem started, after a couple of miles, it was fine. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Have you checked the belt and the P/S fluid level?

Without some test equipment I would condemn the pump. Replacing it should cure your problems.
