2004 Freestar SEL fuel injector question

I'm not good at car lingo, so please bear with me. A few months ago, my check engine light came on and I took it to someone who said that there was a problem with the fuel injector sensor. I didn't have any trouble with it and we thought we might have some power train warranty left. Well, the light went off and I honestly didn't think about it again. Now the light is back on and we are having the following symptom: When I'm driving, the RPMs will go up and immediately back down, the van just cruises for a second and all's back to normal. I've been assured it's not the transmission. My question is twofold, what in the world is a fuel injector sensor and is this something my husband (fairly mechanically inclined) could replace? We are out of warranty and can't really afford a huge repair bill. Thanks in advance for any advice.

RE: 2004 Freestar SEL fuel injector question

Couple things it could be, but 'fuel injection sensor' isn't really a correct name/part.. If you can get the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) read forbetter direction, it would take some of the guess work out of the equation and may save on buying any un needed parts.. Some of the auto parts vendors will read the code for you for 'free' like Autozone ect..
