2005 Montego AWD question

Hi everyone, I have a 2005 Mercury Montego with AWD malfunction throwing code P1889. The original rear carrier was replaced in 2013 because of this issue. The Ford dealership put in a used carrier, at my request, due to the prohibitive cost of a new one. The used one malfunctioned a little over a year later. I live in Maine and the garage I normally go to for my maintenance and yearly inspection to me he would not pass my car this year due to this problem. Can the AWD system be bypassed somehow and still be able to pass inspection and be street legal? The car just reverts to FWD when AWD isn't working, doesn't it? I really need some help here because I don't believe it is a reason to fail inspection but I can't seem to find an answer. Thank you for your input.

has nothing to do with the awd, he won't pass it because its setting a powertrain fault code and turning on the ses light.

they won't pass with abs or airbag lights on either.

you should be able to go to a state website and find the safety guidelines.

Wow! Thank you primem. This is very helpful information. Is there a way for this system to be disabled or bypassed whether by the dealership or an independent shop? I really can't get into another vehicle for about two years. Thank you for your time.

ask the tech who signs the certificate as to what your options are

Called the dealership today and told the service advisor my situation. He looked on his computer and saw that I had already replaced the rear carriage once. He put me on hold to speak with a service technician. A minute or two later he got back on the phone and told me the system can be disabled by disconnecting the AWD module. Maybe a half hour job. It would still throw the light but would not prevent the car from passing inspection because it is not considered a safety related issue like the ABS or air bag. Good news!
