'91 Taurus Transmission

Based on what I have seen on this forum I may already have my answer, but you have to ask, you know?

My son has a '91 Taurus with about 50,000 miles on it. The other day he was driving and it just slipped out of gear. If he shuts it down for 30 seconds or so, the trans will re engage but only for about 30 seconds at a time. A local shop told him "transmission" - and wanted to charge $2k (flat fee). He's a senior in high school and has enough concerns without worrying about paying for a trans on his limited income.

Does this sound about right and should we even bother investing the money into it? It sounds like people like the engines but hate the trans. Does Ford have a program for these since there were so many issues?

Thanks for your help. Allen
