Default AC compressor on/off causing rpm's to bottom out

I have a 2004 Ford Escape and my AC hasn't worked for some time, but I do try to keep the air blowing in the car just to have some breeze. I got it charged awhile ago and it worked for a few months but stopping blowing cold after that. I'm not expert at this at all, so this could be a simple answer, but recently the compressor is constantly coming on and going off and when it does this the rpm's bottom out causing the car to stumble and almost turn off. It's only when I'm idling, or in park. Is this just an effect of me needing to charge the system, or does it sound like another issue?
