check engine light?'s

I was driving my ford van the other day and noticed that the engine had a slight miss. The check engine light began to flash then wnet off. about 25 miles later the check engine light flashed again for a few seconds then went away. The van still has the miss.
my question is can I have the check engine codes scanned even though the light is not on and will it be able to tell anything or do I have to wait till the ligh stays on?

Data will be retrievable without the CEL active..

And if you can acess mode 6 data, even if there isn't a code, it will show the cumulative number of misfires per clyinder.
