Did Ford make a map provider change in Sync 3?
Something appears to have significantly changed with the Ford Sync 3 navigation system. Did they make a change in the map provider?
Shortly after we got our 2019 Ford Edge, I had gone to Ford's website to see about a navigation map update. After entering in the information, it told me I had an update and proceeded to let me download the update for free and put it on my own USB drive. The update failed and I was never able to get it to install so I gave up. Just for the heck of it, today, I went back to the website and tried it again. The experience is entirely different this time on a completely new website. The Ford website redirects you to a new website that is powered by HERE, the same company that makes the maps for Garmin and is owned by the German automakers. There is no longer an option to download the map update and instead there is a $40 charge for the shipment of a USB drive. I had thought that the navigation experience in Sync 3 originally used Telenav Maps and this press release seems to confirm it. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/telenav-selected-to-power-navigation-experience-for-ford-sync-3-300017226.html I'm wondering if the Telenav relationship ended and the reason for the new website and the inability to download the map updates is because they have just switch to HERE? |
