Hatch help

The handle to open the latch on my '96 explorer sport spins in place while trying to open the hatch. Anybody know how to fix it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks:)

I see nobody had any ideas, so here's what I would do: I'd remove the inside plastic panel to gain access to the hatch lock ... that'll let me see what is wrong there. HTH ...
