Well, If you remove the pan, look carefully (or maybe not so carefully) at the oil; it'll probably be dark, but look for any metal or shiny oil (it can get so bad it will reflect light). The valve body bolted right there, but if there's many miles, then you might want to just overhaul it. Watch out, as the removal is not the easiest on these.
