Steering wheel removal Transit 2.2 2007
 

Hi,

Could someone give me some guidelines in how to remove the steering wheel on my Ford Transit 2.2 2007 Van?

I have tried to "flip" up the horn cover but it just don`t want to come loose.

First of all, you are working around an air bag system. It would be wise to purchase a manual that describes the step by step procedure when working in that area.
It's not complicated, but you should be careful and know what you are doing.

May I ask why you need to remove the steering wheel assy?

I know, I have worked on several types of vans before, i.e Peugeot Boxer and Mercedes Vito.

Some wiring in the wiring loom is melted all the way from the batteries and in behind the dash, so I need to find the cause and replace the wiring :cool:

as per now, I blame the alternator for overcharging but it can be something else.
Other cars in the past have had dead rodents lying behind the dash, so who knows :rolleyes:

Wiring work can get really involved and it would seem you have your work cut out for you.
If the alternator was overcharging it would not melt certain wires behind the dash. I would suspect you have a high current drain or a direct short that started it all.
Don't know how I could be of any help from here .

Usually there are a few screws under the horn pad that hold it to the steering wheel.

The alternator charged with over 17V so I took out the dashboard and found melted wiring all the way from the batterycase under the seat and to the fuse and relay box behind the glowbox.

I replaced all the wiring ( hell of a job ), got a new alternator and replaced the battery relay and now the van is back on the road with no faults.
It charges 14,2V now and I am happy as can be :D
