2008 Edge Blower motor speed erratic

A friend has a 2008 Ford Edge, when she turns on the blower motor it starts off on high, then it drops to low and then repeats. It's totally erratic, If it was a resister, It seems like all the speeds wouldn't be there.
Does anyone have any advice? This is not only annoying, but I fear it could lead to a total motor failure in the middle of winter.
I would appreciate input, Thank You

Would you know if the vehicle has the standard heating system or does it have automatic climate control?

It has an automatic climate control- the blower just stopped working
- now there is nothing working at all- I am going to attempt to check the blower motor, this would not be a problem if I actually knew where it was- under the glovebox or under the hood?

I believe on that model it should be located behind the glove box. There is a good possibility the problem could be in the automatic temp control system and not necessarily the motor. Did you have a chance to check all the fuses? Look in the owner's manual at the fuse section and it will tell you what fuse/relay controls the climate control system and it's location.

Checked the fuses, pulled the glovebox and cover panel, turned on the blower, hit the bottom of the blower firmly with the palm of my hand several times, motor started running fast, smooth, and quiet. I am ordering a new motor, just to be on the safe side.

Not sure if replacement motor will come with the impeller ( also called squirrel cage blower) , but if it doesn't you will need an allen wrench to loosen the screw on the impeller so you can transfer it to the new motor. Just place the impeller the same distance from the end of the shaft on the replacement blower motor.
