Sequence of events.
Friday morning. check engine light came on. Breakfast and wait for code check. Told Canister purge valve bad but they were out of stock. On way home Friday evening, car died after moderately hard braking. After restart would not continue running over 1000 to 1100 rpm. Any faster and engine would die. At that engine speed it took us an hour and eighteen minutes to get home. On the way the wrench indicator also appeared on dash.

Saturday afternoon. Did voltage and continuity checks related to purge valve. 12 volts present. 17 or 18 ohm resistance across purge valve connections.
New valve delivered to house. Same resistance reading across valve connections. Installed valve and reconnected. Engine now starts fine. No check engine or wrench light on. Even though starting fine, engine dies after about 4 seconds.

Sunday. Well, problem didn't heal itself overnight as I wished.

Monday finds problem still there (of course) and short idle is now rough.

Anyone experienced same problem? or similar? even on different days of week? Any guess as to cost of repair at a shop?
