hi im a newbie, and need help,6.9 timing

Im new to the forum, ive been reading this forum for a minute, I have a 86 idi and im pulling teeth trying to figure out why im having a hard time getting the pump gear, and the cam gear to line up with the timing marks on the harmonic balancer. I removed the pump gear, and cover, matched up the (Ys) I used a mirror to find on the cam gear. Now that I found it, I marked it witb paint, but Ive been turning the crank by hand, but I swear its not moving.I know its 2 to 1 , but somethings wrong.I drove the truck the same day I started this.PLEASE HELP

Welcome to the site..

You hand cranked it over, or bumped it with the starter and the Y Mark hasn't moved would sound like a cam/ gear issue..

6.9 timing nightmare

Thank you for the reply, the cam gear is moving, when I manually crank the engine over, the cam gear moves just fine. but it seems like after I have turned the engine over and over manually, I check my marks and ive not gotten any closer to TDC. Or very little. Should I just pull the waterpump? And. the valve cover? which piston should be up or at TDC?#1? Can I do it that way? Also I heard that With a diesel you shouldnt bump the key to align the timing marks? it seems it would be faster. or will that damage my Injection pump?

still having the same problem I haven't really worked on it much was hoping somebody could help me with that wasn't sure if I posted it in the right place

It ran before,, meaning the pump was just failing, hard start, excessive emissions etc?

If you didn't notice any gear/tooth issues while rotating the engine on over, and it ran prior, should be ok. The crank is keyed/geared, cam as well, So unless there's a base engine/timing issue, I'd install the cam and pump Y'd positions and test run. Pump to cam timing is Y marks, injection pump timing is set off the harmonic balancer points..
