4r70w

Just a couple of question.. I started this project many, many years ago.. things got in the way..
I installed a 4R70W from a 98 V6 mustang behind my 351c...
at that time I had everything I needed to know in my head...
but I've forgotten a few things.
on the manual shift lever (on the trans case driver side) when in the down position and fully forward is this the Park position?
2. Is it also the Park position if the lever is in the up?
When I started this project I took the cable from a Crown Vic and the also the trans cross member...
The car is a 62 Ford wagon with column shift and I want to use the column shift... look more original..

If you disconnect all linkage from the arm on the side of the trans, then rotate the lever attached to the shaft that goes into the trans. As you rotate it from one extreme to the other, you will notice a gap at one end/. When the lever is all the way to the end of it's travel going over that long gap end, the trans is in the park position.

If you count the steps that the detent holds, you will notice the lever comes out of park, goes to revere, then drive ,then D2 , then Low.

Thanks for reminding me.. I must of spent a few hours searching the net for info on the 4R70w mostly I find
companies that want to sell you a product...
I'll be out under the wagon this morning and check it out...

part number is F3LP-7A291-AB. ( the 1 behind the 9 might be wrong, to worn to tell for sure)

Without looking through some manuals, there are only so many parts back there .
Was this as part of just a first inspection or was this trans in a vehicle and had some kind of problem?

Sanddoc Jul 16, 2022 04:25 PM

I bought this from a Ford only wreaking yard many years ago, when I started my wagon project.
I had a local "National" transmission shop give it a once over they said it was in good condition.
I added trans fluid to it the other day about a gal and it leaked passed the rear dust seal..
so I decided to change the seal and the bushing, so I removed the extension. when I did this part came out..
I've looked on the net for about 2 hrs. every trans shop I could find. I even looked up that part number.
found no answer. the guys at Monster trans I guess don't work on Sat, as they have not got back to me...
If I knew what it is for i'd order one.. I can make a guess that it slides on the output shaft, but in which
direction. I will crawl under the wagon on Monday with a flashlight and check out the tail shaft and see
if there is anything to tell me what it is. Then I'll go over to the Trans shop..
It is cracked and needs to be replaced...
Hey thanks for replying... I appreciate that.

From the pix hard to tell if it is metal or otherwise. The only thing I can think of, but have never seen is, some kind of seal to prevent trans fluid from going out through the slip yoke of the front U joint, Speedo drive gers are usually metal with a spiral on the outside surface, can't see that part . Did speedo have any type problem?

I think I. found the part. there is a number 57 for a part just aft of the main case.. you can see it's tapered then there is a spring or a C clip
If you would look at that site, and the diagram with the main case. you'll see it... but it has no number or name... go figure...

I did look in some of the manuals that I have and it shows what appears to e a type seal that was on the output shaft just in front of the rear housing bushing retained by a lock ring. Beats me how it managed to come off and they never had any leak problem,, and maybe they did?

If somebody had the trans apart and pushed it out into the housing when installing the output shaft and never knew it,
I can't see any other way it could come out on it's own..

Thanks hanky
When I find out what has happen I'll post it here...
the reason the rear seal leaked is I put in about 6 quarts of fluid. as the 4r70w calls for 13 quarts.. I thought i was safe.. of course
the car might have been on an angle...but what ever I decided to pull the housing and replace the bushing sense I was going to
replace the seal.
thanks again
