difference between C6 Trans 429 SCJ and 351CJ?

Hi Group,
Can someone explain to me what the difference is between a C6 behind a 429SCJ Cobra like in a 70-71 Torino and a C6 behind a 72 351 Cobra jet w/ a high stall convertor in a 72 Torino?
What are the differences between a R servo-CJ servo & an L servo? Are the 1st & 2nd gear ratios the same in the 429SCJ and the other C6 trans? Any like info for the 71 C6 in an M code Torino GT?
I hope to put a 72 CJ trans in a 70 Torino w a 72 CJ cleveland and 3.73 posi.

Thank you much,
Mike

RE: difference between C6 Trans 429 SCJ and 351CJ?

Well, the main difference is going to be the case...specifically the cast-in "bellhousing". C6 transmissions were built with different bellhousing patterns to bolt up to various specific engine families. The 429, 460 and 351M/400M engines used one bellhousing pattern, while the 351 Cleveland engines shared their bolt pattern with the late 60s and newerWindsor-based small blocks...289, 302 and 351 Windsor. There were also C6 transmissions built to go behind the FE engines (352, 390, 428, etc)...and those use a different bellhousing pattern than either the small block C6 or the "Lima Series" C6, which is what a 429 engine would use.

In short, a C6 from a 351 Cleveland won't bolt up to a 429 engine, and a C6 from a 429 won't bolt up to a 351 Cleveland, but the gear ratios are the same and for the most part, the internals interchange, except for different valve bodies, spring rates, clutches, etc used for different applications. Obviously a C6 from a Lincoln Town Car is going to be calibrated to shift differently than a C6 from a 429 CJ Mustang or something like that!

Torque converters are also different...with different hub diameters for different engine families.

Internal mods can be performed on any C6 using factory or aftermarket parts...but be sure to build your trans in the right case to bolt up to the engien you plan to use!
