Hey there. I have a problem that i just cant figure out.
2002 windstar sel the engine light keeps coming on. i bought a code reading and it keeps coming up as p0402. I tried unplugging the vacuum to the egr and driving the van for a bit and the lite does not go off. Every once in a while the ligt will go off and on usually around the time my wife fills up, dont know if that is just a coincidence or not.
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

The code p0402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected .This code I woud think is the EGR is stuck open or EGR related. Does it run rough?

 

It seems to run fine at idle and high speed!!

 

Do you have any tool's like a vacuum hand pump? Or a socket set?

 

i have the basic tools anything else i can borrow from buddies

 

I would first look for and loose,cracked vacuum lines.If none are found I would suspect carbon build up at the EGR this is a common problem. I would also buy a new EGR gasket a 1 can of gumout. Remove the EGR valve and spray gumout in the passages. Scrape and clean old gasket. Replace gasket then replace the egr. Then disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to clear the code.

 

9 times out of 10 the DPFE sensor has went bad on you. Also check the hoses leading to the sensor.
