1998 ford windstar 3.8 minivan. whats the difference between "check engine" versus "service engine soon". the service engine soon light stayed on for aprox 20 mins until i parked the vehicle and the next day i cranked it up the service engine soon light was off. went to pep boys and they say they cant find anything unless the lights stay on.

If the Service Engine Soon light came on, then there is a code stored in the system that can be read. Check Engine is same thing.

 

That's why Pep Boys doesn't fix cars, just sells parts. The system has a memory and can be accessed for up to 80 key starts after the light goes off. Unless it is erased or the battery is disconnected. [sm=mail.gif]
