Speedometer jumping

We got a 1995 Windstar, and the speedometer just started jumping. (IE:It'll jump from 70 - 110) Is there a cable on this vehicle?
I searched the forum and didn't find the answer.

Thanks...

RE: Speedometer jumping

If it's equipped with a EIC (electronic instrument cluster) there's no cable.. If equipped with a conventional cluster, then it would have a cable..

Cool, thanks. I'll pull the cluster and check the cable.

Look in the engine area in front of where the instrument cluster is behind the right hand side of the firewall looking in the engine area. There will be a speedometer cable coming out near the power brake vaccum canister and about one foot from the firewall the cable has a disconnect so you can remove the cluster. This is about the only way to get the cluster removed. On all the clusters I have seen for a 95 3.8 engine they have a cable and an electronic vss, vehicle speed sensor, located in an almost imposible place on top of the transaxle. The electronic side supplies the computer for tramsmission shifting for one thing. The speedometer and other gauges can be replaced by removing the plastic face and the shift indicator cable. They just unplug from the printed circuit board. I just replaced my 95 and 98 cluster and still have problems.
