Default What type of Power Steering Fluid in a 98 Windstar

Did have the following posted under another issue but reposted as it is slightly different now.

Well I have the pump changed, went fairly smoothly.

Steering is working fine but I still have a whine when the revs are picked up, quite as a mouse at idle even when I turn the wheel.

I bled the system by turning lock to lock about a dozen times or so.

The Parts Shop told me to use Mercon ATF fluid, is this correct?

So should I just run it for a while and assume it will go aways as the pump frees up and the last of the air bleeds out or do I have something more serious here? ID the Mercon fluid correct or not?

regards
Shrek

Mercon is correct..

Give it some miles to perk all the air out of the system.. Turning lock~lock will get the brunt out, but usually some run time is needed to purge all the air..

For a 1998 Ford Windstar the correct Power Steering Fluid these days is Mercon V Automatic Transmission Fluid. I called my Ford Dealer and asked, and I also read the bulletin that Ford issue in 2007 replacing all Mercon with Mercon V. The manual specifies ATF type F. I believe the spec was updated to Mercon and then Ford changed it to Mercon V per the bulletin. They do sell a DEXRON III / MERCON blend which they told me at the parts store I could use but I'd go with the Mercon V.
