I am taking on the job of replacing my ball joints. I just replaced all the tie rod ends due to 2 breaking. I took the truck to have it aligned and the mechanic then mentioned the ball joints were bad. I have to agree and ticked I missed these. Anyway, I have never done this job before and was wondering if anyone on this board may have done it? I have a 1999 Ford Extended Cab 5.4 4WD with 183,000 miles.

So far:

1. jacked up the truck
2. Put stands under the front frame
3. Put the jack with wood under the LH control arm
4. Loosened the bolts on the control arm
5. Loosened the nut on the upper ball joint
Stop---I don't have a big enough socket for the lower ball joint nut and
My tierod puller is too small

Off to the store to buy new parts, bigger socket, rent a ball joint puller/press

Anyone please add or subtract from my procedures to make this job easier and my truck run smooth. I baby this truck and at 183,000 miles, am trying to make it to 250,000 on this engine.

Go here.

For an under $20 investment for the your baby you too can pop your own joints.
